Cool Climate Wines
When it comes to Australia’s wine regions, the cool climate wine regions of Canberra and Tumbarumba used to be overshadowed by the longer standing regions of the Barossa Valley in South Australia, and the Hunter Valley in New South Wales.
However, scratch the surface of Canberra and Tumbarumba and you’ll find some of Australian wine’s best-kept wine secrets. The cold crisp winters and hot dry summers of these regions allow the grapes to ripen slowly without losing any acidity. The result is a series of cool climate wines with impeccably balanced flavours.
Wine With Exquisite Taste and Character
Kosciuszko Wines are based in the Western Foothills of the Snowy Mountains in Tumbarumba, close to Mount Kosciuszko. This area has been producing grapes since the first European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. Their work helped establish the Tumbarumba region as one of the most exciting areas on the Australian wine map.
The unique microclimate of the region helps to create a range of premium cool climate sparkling wines with bright fruity flavours and a silky mouthfeel. At Kosciuszko Wines, we source our grapes from the best growers in the region. Our experienced winemakers then blend the grapes to produce a range of exciting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines.
Cold Climate Chardonnay
Our Chardonnay grapes are sourced from vines planted 630 metres above sea level in north-south facing rows. This exposes them to temperatures as low as 2ºC during the winter and high levels of sunlight during the summer. This change of seasons allows the grapes to stay on the vine longer and ripen slowly. The result is a wine which displays intense citrus flavours with bright acidity.
Cold Climate Pinot Noir
The somewhat unpredictable weather of the region is also responsible for creating a unique blend of flavours in Pinot Noir grapes. The character of the wine can change each vintage depending on the amount of rainfall and sunlight the vines receive during the growing season.
Some years our Pinot Noir wine can take on earthy mushroom-like flavours with a hint of cherry. While other years the firm tannins produce deeper, richer and rounded flavours. But whatever the accents of the wine, you can guarantee a sophisticated balanced flavour which is easy on the nose and graceful on the palate.
